WOW! Travel & PNG Trekking help to sponsor the DahCavill Customary School with donations of school supplies and vouchers for electricity, petrol etc. Many of the Kokoda Trekkers take medical supplies and school books with them to donate to the school after they have completed their trek. It's a great way to help support the local community of Port Moresby.
DahCavill Customary School
“Virtue Is Its Own Reward”
DahCavill Customary School is located in Central Province adjacent to Laloki Psychiatric Hospital. Its principals are Dave & Walo Cavill. We began in 2001 to teach our numerous Bubus (grand children & children of our large extended family) good manners, good English & the work ethic.
Staff comprise of 8 national volunteers. It has 1 computer classroom with 20 computers, 1 elementary classroom of 4 raised shipping containers with a roof covering an open area of 18mx6m. The containers are equipped as kitchen & accommodation. There are also 2 army tent classrooms with a computer in each.
The schools syllabus teaches international standard educational computer programs, workshop & agricultural skills with all necessary rural life skills. This includes archery for hunting, tractor driving, computer skills etc. We have various junior outward bound type excursions where the kids are taken through challenging situations that they find ways of conquering.
The school is also a registered study centre for CODE (College of Distance Education) and caters for worthy; screened/selected youths & parents. An I.T. class or computer training with a library is open for registered parents.
The school distributes stationery & school equipment to other rural schools that are in need of these items.
All religions are discouraged & government funding & influence is avoided.
Pupils range from 2 years old to 14 years. The school runs 7 days a week with top up kids from town & rural schools. There are no holidays. Small kids are picked up at 7:30am & returned home with our old bus & ute. Lunch is provided.
There are no school fees or school uniforms. Staff are paid in kind from the school farm produce or from the workshop cash if & when it comes.
The school is financed from our farm produce, workshop repairs & our 50 ODD PATRONS. Our Patrons range from grass root men & women to large commercial organizations.
The school has a well equipped workshop with 2 lathes, welding machines & woodwork machines.
Its farm has about 200 hectares of land now being cultivated by its pupils, staff & parents. It also has a mango orchard of 800 trees, all local root stock, grafted with foreign bud wood.
Please come & see how it all works or contact our email address & we’ll answer your questions & send you photos etc.
